It's cold and hard underfoot, which some pets (and their owners) don't love in bedrooms and living areas. But for entryways, mudrooms, and laundry rooms where pets come in from outside, tile is unbeatable.

Laminate — $4/sqft All-In
Laminate is surprisingly scratch-resistant thanks to its aluminum oxide top layer — better than real hardwood in most cases. It's the most affordable option with good scratch resistance. The catch? Standard laminate is not waterproof. If your dog has accidents or you're in a wet area, LVP is the safer choice. But for dry rooms with well-trained pets, laminate works great at $4/sqft.

What to Avoid with Pets
Soft hardwood (pine, fir, walnut):These woods are beautiful but they're soft. Dog nails will leave visible scratches within weeks — not months, weeks. If you want hardwood, choose a hard species like oak or hickory and accept that some wear will happen. Or save money with LVP at $5.50/sqft and get a floor that stays pristine.
Carpet in main living areas:Carpet is a magnet for pet hair, absorbs urine odor permanently, and stains easily. We regularly replace carpet for pet owners who regret the choice within a year. If you love carpet, keep it in bedrooms where pets don't have access. Everywhere else, go hard surface.
Bamboo:Despite its reputation for hardness, strand-woven bamboo scratches more easily than LVP and isn't waterproof. It's also more expensive. Not worth it for pet households.
Real Talk: Hardwood with Dogs
We install a lot of hardwood — it's $8/sqft all-in and it's a beautiful floor. But we're honest with pet owners: hardwood and dogs are a compromise.
Hard species like red oak (Janka hardness 1,290) and hickory (1,820) handle dog nails better than soft species. A matte or satin finish hides scratches better than high-gloss. And you can always refinish hardwood ($4.50/sqft all-in) to remove scratches every 7-10 years.
But if your priority is a floor that looks exactly the same in 5 years as the day it was installed — with dogs running around on it — that's LVP, not hardwood. We'll help you make the right call during your free estimate.
Tips to Protect Any Floor from Pet Wear
- Trim nails regularly — this is the single biggest thing you can do to prevent scratches
- Place mats at all exterior doors — catches dirt, moisture, and grit before it hits your floor
- Wipe up accidents immediately — even on waterproof floors, don't let moisture sit at seams
- Use felt pads under furniture — pets jumping on/off furniture causes furniture to shift and scratch
- Keep water bowls on a mat — chronic dripping in one spot can damage even water-resistant materials
